Artist Statement

My art is based on observations of the existing physical world. I often begin by taking digital pictures around my house and garden, or use photographs from my travels. Color combinations as well as strong shadows and light are what I love to play around with both in my prints and my pastel paintings.

Recently I have been making monotypes. Painting on zinc or Plexiglas plates, each image is created by going through the press numerous times. Each time ink is added in one or more areas and may be removed in other places. The monotypes create their own visual surprises and have a different complexity than what is achieved in the pastels.

One series, “Clouds & Wires” is an urban view combining cloudscapes with electric and bus transit wires and poles. The images are dramatic portraits of clouds with modern life intruding into view. They take a perceived visual obstruction, and incorporate it into the artwork creating a tension between an element of nature and a man-made object, between an ever-changing backdrop and a stationary foreground.

The series “Aerial Mist” and “Orcas Light” are based on many trips over the years through Washington’s San Juan Islands. The colors are emotional snapshots anticipating what lies ahead, of the completion of the journey and of the enjoyment of island-time.

The changing color of light whether through time of day or season of the year is more often the subject of my art than an actual rendition of a scene.
